The Nu Natural You

Updated: Mar 28, 2021

Today marks ONE YEAR since I’ve been working from home full-time. I’m sure that is true for most of us.

We’ve transitioned from board rooms and in-person meetings to conference calls and video chats.

If you are anything like me, your morning routine was once consumed with always putting your best face forward at all times. Transitioning to full-time telework has allowed a little bit of luxury to relax that just a little. That’s when it dawned on me the real flaws in my skin and the missteps or shortcuts I was taking when it came to my skincare routine.

Somedays I took shortcuts by maybe half-way washing off the mounds of makeup I had caked on throughout the day, promising myself I would take care of it in the morning. Or buy some expensive clay mask that I had convinced myself would work miracles if I would only use it once a week. Well, that may have lasted, well, let’s be honest, one week.

Then there’s the sign of aging. Let’s face it, after 50, it’s true what they say. You start noticing things you necessarily hadn’t noticed before. Now, I’m not sure if this is due to becoming more self-aware or if it’s really that FIFTY is the true coming of another cycle of age.

Whatever the case may be, whatever your story, the bottom line is we should never skim or take our skincare maintenance lightly. No matter the age, no matter the circumstance, there are some things that should always remain a priority.

Also, it wasn’t until later in life I realized the importance of using sunscreen daily on my face. As a person of color, we’re told (at least in some instances) that sunscreen is not needed as part of our daily skincare maintenance. That is so untrue. As I’ve aged, I’ve noticed significant hyperpigmentation appearing on my face. I was advised by a dermatologist it’s due in part because I have not used sunscreen as part of my daily skincare regimen (along with other things). But this stood out to me the most. It’s more prominent on my left side than my right also due to long commute times and sitting hours in the car. Ding ding ding…it all made sense.

Since starting Mary Kay skincare as my daily regular skincare regime, my skin has tremendously improved. And the best part? I only have to re-up products every 2-3 months! Stay tuned for more pictures of my MK journey. Here’s my routine in order (click on links for product information):
